Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, most activities for all of us have been carried out at home. The home has become the foundation for the success
or failure of children's development through home-based learning. The hope of many families is that the home becomes a Home Sweet Home.
This is certainly not easy if it is not based on knowledge of the stages of child development. The recent Spring eld School Webinar on the topic
'Guiding Children and Not Demanding Children', opened one of the many doors to a Home Sweet Home.
There were two very interesting ideas to take away from this Webinar. The rst being that we are directed to a line of thinking that states that a
child’s success is determined by the collaboration between the teacher, student and parent. Teachers have a role in the child’s growth to success.
Due to the lack of ability to teach as a parent, teachers have had to help parents with this education. If you have close or distant relatives who are
having di culty with their child's education, then contact Spring eld School.
The second idea that caught my attention was that when the expectation for the child is too high,
and when we don't take into account the psychological level of the child as described by Erikson's
Stages of Psychosocial Development the child will experience di culties in learning. An example is
that the child may not have reached the problem solving stage, when being asked to solve a
problem which can then result in emotional distress because they are not ready for this stage of
learning.
From this Webinar, we were given a wise solution on how to lead children and not force
expectations on children. There are 3 Roles for a Parent. A Parent as a parent, a parent as a friend
and a parent as a life coach. “Parents do not become or perform the executive function of their
children but parents train the executive function of their children. Be the execution function coach
for your children. How to make daily, weekly, monthly plans, create routines, develop self
regulation and develop focus.”(Hanlie Muliani, 2020) By following what we have learned through
this webinar, I believe that there will be signi cant changes in your home that will lead to the home
sweet home stage. Have a nice day and may God bless you.
