Bye-Bye Plastic Bags!
By Primary SFPB
As the awareness of sustainable living has increased over the past few years,
people are increasingly practicing the 3Rs (reuse, reduce and recycle). Reuse
refers to re-using items that still have usable aspects, reduce refers to choosing
what we really need and not buying the things that we want so we can reduce
the amount of waste, and recycle implies that we use the waste of something as
a new resources. We, at Spring eld School PB1, are also taking part in this
positive movement. P3 students, guided by the G10 students, tried to reuse our
old t-shirts and turned them into something useful again.
This year, the event was held online and was attended by all P3 students and
teachers. The event was called ‘Bye-Bye Plastic Bags’ and was organised by G10
students. Prior to attending the event, students were asked to prepare an old
t-shirt that they no longer used and have them cut according to the guidelines.
On the day of the event, students were briefed about the dangers of using
plastics in our daily activities. Plastics are thrown into the oceans which then turn
into microplastics. Microplastics are subsequently consumed by marine animals
and many of us enjoy seafood! However, education helps us understand better.
We can do something today to help reduce our waste and reuse what we already
have.
“It’s cool! I can bring this to the grocery store next time, so we don’t have to buy the plastic bag!” commented one of the P3 students. With this
event, we hope we can be a better human living on our planet earth. Let’s protect our earth because we only have one earth!
